Chapter Seven

They were married on Sunday afternoon with Steve and Amy acting as witnesses. Steve shook her hand after the ceremony, while Amy almost knocked her over with a huge bear hug.

“I’m so glad to have a sister. You can’t know how I’ve longed for this moment,” Amy said.

Vicky laughed. “Thanks for the welcome.”

“Come back to our place for supper,” Amy invited.

“No thanks, I’ve got an early start in the morning,” Alex said. “Why don’t you come back to the hotel with us? Molly will give us supper. Steve can help me cart Vicky’s trunks to my place. I swear, she’s packed rocks in them.”

“We’ll get to know each other over a cup of tea and cake,” Amy said.

Vicky followed Amy as she scurried along. For a woman who was with child she moved so quickly Vicky was hard-pressed to keep up with her.

Once inside the hotel Amy spoke to the waitress. “A table for four please, our husbands will be here soon, or maybe not so soon.”

The girl showed them to a table and walked away.

“You know, Steve is the most talkative of the brothers, but he sometimes has dark moods.” Amy’s features grew somber. “He has terrible dreams sometimes, about the war, but mostly he’s happy.”

“And Alex?”

“He’s much quieter, but get the two of them together and it’s different. Alex told us what happened. I’m so sorry, Vicky. It was an awful thing for me to post that letter.”

“It’s all right. In a way it was a Godsend. I couldn’t stay with my brother.”

She told Amy everything and was surprised when her sister-in-law’s eyes filled with tears. “What a skunk your brother turned out to be. As for your father, I can’t believe he would do that, after all you did for him.”

“I just hope I haven’t stepped out of the frying pan into the fire. Alex wants it to be a marriage of convenience so we can get an annulment later on.”

Vicky was shocked when Amy burst out laughing. Finally, she recovered enough to say. “Is that what you want?”

“I’m not sure.”

“Of course it isn’t. You will want a proper marriage and so will he after a few days. I bet you he’ll be lucky to hang out until Christmas.”

“Amy!” They were soon giggling like a pair of schoolgirls.
